seconde/seconde/ sources, authenticates and services legendary vintage watches... and then adds a twist: by replacing the seconds' hand - hence the name seconde/seconde/ - the timepiece is transformed into something fun. The contrast is arresting to say the least: the aged dials, carrying half a century of history, are electrified by colourful anachronistic watch hands. Some are nods to pop culture, others more cryptic and offbeat, but all the hands redesigned by seconde/seconde/ say something about the watches they adorn. In their faux-naïf aesthetic, poetry and irony are never far apart.
This series is based on the iconic Omega Chronostop. Powered by the manually-wound caliber 865/920, derived from the famous caliber 861, the watch was selected as the official timer at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico. Manufactured from 1966 to 1974, this 60-second stopwatch operated from a single pusher and was marketed as a tool for athletes, drivers, and busy professionals.
Parisian artist Romaric André has worked in haute-horlogerie for many years. He has now decided to return to his first passion - vintage watches - but in a totally unexpected way.
With seconde/seconde/ he is taking on mini icons of culture: "I like to play around with legendary vintage pieces. These are the watches I love. I stay minimal, only altering the hands. But the result is radical".
Working with the very last hands manufacturer in France, and surrounded by his fellow "brilliant-yet-grumpy vintage-only watchmakers", Romaric André plans to position seconde/seconde/ as a "workshop fighting the obvious and eager to satisfy a clientèle seeking high-human-value-added-products".
