Back in 2011, MB&F had just launched Legacy Machine N°1, the first creation of a new collection, alongside its existing Horological Machines. 10 years later LMX returns to the earliest encounter with the Legacy Machine collection, featuring the same "flying" balance wheel, dual time zones and vertical power reserve indicator - but everything else is different.
LMX reveals functional elements such as the battle-axe-shaped escapement bridge and gear-train components. Three large wheels are particularly visible: two are set in motion when setting the time on the corresponding time display, while the gear at 6 o’clock is the common seconds’ wheel. Under its sapphire crystal dome, a new bespoke 13.4mm balance wheel with inertia blocks.
In a nod to the world-first vertical power reserve indicator of Legacy Machine No1, LMX features a novel three-dimensional display showcasing the impressive seven days (168 hours) of power reserve. There is the option between two modes of counting down the power reserve: two markers are positioned on opposite sides of a hemisphere; one framed by an arched scale numbered 1 to 7, another with a scale showing the days of the week.
This complex and novel interplay of components is given an additional level of intricacy, by the rotation of the entire power-reserve display itself. This allows wearers to adjust the orientation of the indication, making the day-of-the-week or numeric scale more visible when LMX is on the wrist.
After decades conforming to the rules of corporate watchmaking, Max Büsser broke the chains and started a rebellion in 2005; a rebellion called MB&F - Maximilian Büsser & Friends.
MB&F is an artistic concept laboratory based around a simple idea: to assemble collectives of independant watchmaking professionals to develop radical watches - Horological or Legacy Machines. By nurturing teams of talented individuals, harnessing their passion and creativity and crediting each person's essential role, MB&F uses their synergy to become much greater than the sum of its parts. Respecting tradition, but never constrained by it, MB&F reinterprets traditional, high-quality watchmaking into three-dimensional kinetic sculptures.
While MB&F’s futuristic Horological Machines have a firm foundation in the very best of traditional horology, Büsser wanted to pay homage to that rich tradition by imagining the type of timepieces he might create if he had been born 100 years earlier, i.e. 1867 instead of 1967. This gave birth to the more classic Legacy Machine collection, inaugurated in 2011 and celebrated a decade later with LMX.
